The Importance of Project Management in the VUCA world
The
role of a Project Management professional has gone far beyond just managing the
projects. They are being viewed as a disrupter and their role has become more
prominent in an organization than ever before. They lead a program, an endeavor
that an organization forms itself on. With the kind of ever-changing business
landscape we live in, there is a far greater need for a Project Manager to look
beyond managing project deliveries and gain complete control on achieving the
business outcomes as well. They need to break out from their traditional,
predictive methodologies to adapting a more non-conventional, dynamic and agile
approach in their quest to achieving the strategic goals. Below are some areas
a Project Manager needs to focus/work on to cultivate a contemporary mindset
required in these challenging times:
Collaborative
Leadership: Agile philosophy has coined a new term called
“Servant-leadership” which bears a strong relationship with having
collaborative leadership. This leadership style helps to connect with teams
within and across departments to take up key decisions required in keeping
teams aligned and streamlining various processes. This creates an inclusive
environment with a shared sense of responsibility wherein they contribute to
something larger than themselves. This is one form of participative decision
making as each one of them expresses their viewpoints in the larger interest of
an organization. This lets organizations embrace leveraging on peoples’ skills,
perspectives and opinions which are very critical in driving change in this
VUCA world.
Fostering
an agile culture: We talk a lot about Emotional intelligence (EQ) and its
role in one’s personal growth. However, this trait has a strong bearing on
driving and shaping an organization’s culture. The culture of any organization
forms a backdrop of anything they intend to do. And in these uncertain times,
the project manager with his EQ skills needs to inculcate the right mindset
with the team so that they adapt the required flexible and robust strategy.
Innovative thinking needs to be driven to explore different ways of
implementing technology, defining processes and formulating policies. As a part
of agile culture, a PM needs to scan through and take into account all the
possible impacts an environment change might have, in order to build strategies
that can offset the potential setbacks of volatility and uncertainties.
Strategic
Networking: There won’t be any better time for Project Managers to
shift their focus from doing a mere stakeholder engagement to forging long-term
collaborative partnerships. Networking has always been the term frequently used
in the corporate environment, as a necessary component for achieving career
growth. However, at an organization level, networking across customers,
competitors & partners provides the political flexibility and allegiance
required to thrive under such changing times. Even at a project level,
networking across the levels of an organization provides invaluable insights
required to ensure having a complete congruence with the strategic goals at all
times.
Establishing
a feedback loop: PMs are protagonists in setting the ball rolling. They
need to take a lead and establish the feedback loops required to learn and
adopt a new strategy. This is also an underlying philosophy for being agile and
a framework of continuous learning and improvement. Identify-Plan-Act-Reflect
is the loop that inspires persistence through adversity and helps to make minor
tweaks along the way based on the leanings gathered. This constant cycle allows
an organization to monitor its progress against an external environment and
take required actions to bring itself back on track, cushioning itself from any
sort of potential setbacks. These loops need to be set by PMs in every aspect
of its value-driven lifecycle. They are then can be scaled at an organizational
level across all its processes and offerings, thereby, can form an integral
part of its business strategy.
Enhancing
team productivity: The key challenge for a Project Manager these days is to
enhance the team’s productivity while working remotely. Team productivity has a
direct impact on business outcomes and hence it cannot be over-looked. Various
platforms are being used to connect with the members virtually for having
frequent meetings and gathering status reports. Exercising power skills and
entrusting people forms a core in achieving higher team productivity. Also, in
modern times, there isn’t much need of having the same level of supervision in
the past. Achieving business outcomes and the required corresponding actions
should form a larger part in discussions than taking a mere work status.
Amidst
this VUCA world, it is imperative for the leaders of an organization to stay
hooked-on to their “Why”: the compelling cause for which they set out in doing
their business activities. The idea is how to navigate through these
uncertainties and still advance their purpose and hold onto them. Project
Managers play an instrumental role in driving the change by constantly
reviewing their project goals against business needs. They act as change agents
for an organization to implement new rules as per what an environment demands
in terms of technology, tactics and processes.
